Learning Activities:
Do Now:
- Log in to laptop using student username and password.
- Go to National Geographic’s website (http://www.nationalgeographic.org/education/what-is-geography/) and locate their definitions for “physical” and “human” geography.
- Copy National Geographic’s definitions for both terms on your “Do Now” sheet.
- Class discussion: What is the difference between “physical geography” and “human geography”?
Agenda:
- Demonstrate Sheppard Software’s “Tutorials” for Africa, Europe, and Asia.
- Students will learn the names of different African, European, and Asian countries by clicking on each country at the “Tutorial” level. The program will say the name of the countries as they are clicked on.
- After students have clicked on each country at the “Tutorial” level, they should begin to “Drill and practice” on “Level 1” of Africa.
- Once a student has finished “Level 1” of Africa with 85% or greater accuracy the student should take a screenshot of their results and label the picture accordingly.
Ex. “Last name, First name-Africa” - Students should complete “Level 1” for European countries (http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Europe/Eur_G0_1024_768.html) and Middle Eastern countries (http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/middle-east_G0_Click.html) with 85% accuracy and take screenshots of their progress.
- Once students complete “Level 1” for African, European, and Middle Eastern countries they should upload their results (screenshots) to their student blog. This step can be tweaked if your school uses a LMS (learning management system) such as Schoology or Google Classroom. Students can also email their results by adding the picture files as attachments.
- If students do not complete the assignment in class the should completed for homework.
Differentiation:
- For Honors level classes the teacher may want to have students complete the country recognition games on a higher level and attain the same (85%) proficiency.
- For ELL (English Language Learner) students the teacher may want to have them write the country names down as they learn the names on the “Tutorial” level. Completing “Level 1” may be optional for some students depending on their level of English acquisition.
